Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has taken a significant step toward strengthening public communication by appointing veteran media consultant Dr. Joel Isabirye to oversee the establishment of a dedicated city radio station.
Dr. Isabirye was selected as the best-evaluated bidder from a pool of nine media service providers who responded to KCCA’s procurement process for the project.
The planned KCCA Radio is expected to become a strategic communication platform designed to improve access to information on city programmes, public services, development projects, policies, and community initiatives.
The Authority currently disseminates information through partnerships with various radio and television stations as well as digital platforms. However, officials believe a dedicated station will enable more direct, timely, and consistent engagement with Kampala residents.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by KCCA to modernize communication and enhance citizen participation in urban governance.
Once operational, the station is expected to provide regular updates on city management issues, including infrastructure development, revenue collection, sanitation, environmental management, public health, and transport services.
KCCA officials say the station will operate as a public service broadcaster focused on educating, informing, and engaging residents rather than commercial broadcasting.
Dr. Isabirye brings extensive experience in media development and broadcasting consultancy, having contributed to the establishment and growth of several leading radio and television stations in Uganda.
The Authority hopes the new platform will strengthen transparency, accountability, and public awareness while supporting Kampala’s transformation into a modern and well-managed city.
