A driver attached to a private security company has been arrested by Kampala Metropolitan Police after he was found in possession of government stores during an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division.
The suspect, identified as Prosper Turinawe, 36, a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on June 21, 2026, following reports that he had been seen carrying a pistol along Mawanda Road.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, officers from Wandegeya Police Station acted on the information and launched an operation to track down the suspect.
“Upon follow-up, officers established that the suspect had been staying at a lodge in the area. Although he initially evaded arrest, further information led to his interception at about 6:00 a.m. while in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition,” Owoyesigyire said.
A subsequent search conducted at Turinawe’s residence in Kyebando Central led to the recovery of approximately 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and other uniforms from various organisations.
Police exhibited the recovered items as evidence and charged the suspect with unlawful possession of suspected government stores.
Owoyesigyire said preliminary investigations suggest that the premises occupied by the suspect may have been used as a storage point for the recovered items.
“The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue to establish the source of the exhibits and trace the firearm that remains unaccounted for. He will be produced in court upon completion of inquiries,” he added.
Police has urged the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station as investigations continue.
