President Egypt-Uganda Trade Ties Grow as Outgoing Ambassador Bids Farewell to Museven Museveni has received Egypt’s outgoing Ambassador to Uganda, Monzer Selim, who paid a farewell visit to the President at State House, Entebbe.

Selim, who has served as Egypt’s ambassador to Uganda for four years, will conclude his tour of duty on August 31, 2026. His successor is expected to arrive in Uganda on September 4.

During the meeting, Museveni wished Selim success in his next assignment.

“I wish you good luck,” the President said.

Selim thanked Museveni for the support extended to him, the Egyptian Embassy and the Government of Egypt during his tenure.

He said he would return to Egypt to take up responsibilities relating to Horn of Africa affairs, a role that would continue to bring him into contact with Uganda.

“I’m going back to headquarters in Egypt, and I’ll be responsible for the Horn of Africa issues. So, I guess Uganda will not be a stranger to me,” Selim said.

Selim highlighted the growth in economic relations between Uganda and Egypt during his tenure, citing an increase in the number of major Egyptian companies operating in Uganda.

According to the outgoing envoy, the number of major Egyptian companies with established operations in Uganda increased from two when he assumed office to five.

He said the value of operations by Egyptian companies in Uganda had also grown from about $120 million at the beginning of his tenure and could reach approximately $700 million following planned investments next year.

“With our upcoming investment next year, we will reach approximately $700 million. So that’s about six times,” he said.

The ambassador said the growth reflected increased investor confidence and stronger commercial ties between the two countries.

Selim also commended Museveni’s approach to regional issues, including developments in Somalia and Sudan and cooperation on Nile Basin water resources.

He said Egypt had followed Uganda’s leadership within the Nile Basin Initiative, particularly its efforts to promote dialogue and consultation among member states.

“Your wisdom and the wisdom of Uganda has guided the family of the NBI through troublesome times,” Selim said, adding that Egypt was counting on Uganda’s continued efforts to promote consultations among Nile Basin countries.

The outgoing envoy said Uganda and Egypt were also considering new areas of cooperation, including the establishment of a joint business council, increased Egyptian investment and collaboration on infrastructure projects.

The meeting comes as Kampala and Cairo seek to deepen economic, diplomatic and regional cooperation, particularly in trade, investment and Nile Basin affairs.
