The World-Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is set to play a crucial role at the Africa Food Systems Annual Summit (AFS) 2024, taking place from September 2 to 6 in Kigali, Rwanda.
The summit, themed “Innovate, Accelerate and Scale: Delivering Food Systems Transformation in a Digital and Climate Era,” will provide an essential platform for WWF to advocate for sustainable and climate-resilient food systems across the continent.
Ivan Tumuhimbise, Country Director of WWF Uganda, emphasized the significance of this event as an opportunity to engage with key policymakers and influencers on the importance of aligning food systems with ecological and climate resilience goals.
“This summit is a pivotal moment for us to engage with policymakers and influencers on the urgent need to align our food systems with ecological and climate resilience goals,” Tumuhimbise stated.
“This alignment is crucial for securing a sustainable future for both people and nature.”
WWF’s participation at the summit will focus on promoting nature-positive solutions and integrating climate resilience into agricultural practices.
The organization aims to underscore the protection of Africa’s critical ecosystems, which are vital to the continent’s food systems.
“Our goal is to ensure that African leaders and stakeholders recognize the essential connection between healthy ecosystems and sustainable food systems,” added Nancy Rapando, Africa’s Food Future Initiative Lead.
The summit, hosted by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and organized by the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) alongside key African governments, serves as a strategic platform for leaders in the agriculture and food sectors to develop long-term strategies for transforming Africa’s food systems.
