This year’s Joe Walker remembrance walk has been flagged off in Kampala.
The road safety walk aimed at remembering lives lost on Ugandan roads and raising awareness about road safety was flagged off by former Cranes captain, Dennis Onyango at the Kampala Sheraton Hotel.
Speaking during the flag off, Onyango underscored the importance of road safety.
“We need to be vigilant on the road. We must think about the person in the road, whether it’s a husband, a wife, a kid, because we all need to live our lives, but it starts with us,” Onyango said.
“Road safety awareness is very important, because we know during the festive season, we all get a little bit busy and forget that life is very important and someone else’s life is also important.”
The chief walker, Joseph Beyanga said by walking, he wants to inspire many others, not only into walking by also raise awareness about safety on the road.
“One of the things I would like us to do is we should be role models of what it means to be a pedestrian, and also take time to watch out what’s happening on the road.”
The 2024 Remembrance 60km Relay Walk organized in a relay format, emphasizes road safety as a shared responsibility.
“We are not setting out to walk 60 kilometers alone, but we are sharing the responsibility, and that tells you what it means if we did each one of us, what we are supposed to do. If government did what they are supposed to do, the drivers did what they are supposed to do and the pedestrians did what they are supposed to do, we can’t fail to get safe roads. That is the message we are putting out.”
