National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has appointed the party’s Deputy President for the Eastern Region, John Baptist Nambeshe, as the acting president of the opposition party replacing Lina Zedriga.
The announcement was made on Bobi Wine’s X account as he thanked Lina Zedriga Waru for serving as acting president over the last four months.
“For four months, Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru has been acting President of our Party. During this period, she has steered the party well and kept the revolution alive. We’re all very grateful for her dedication and service,” Bobi Wine wrote.
He said Zedriga’s tenure had come to an end and confirmed Nambeshe as her successor.
“As her tenure comes to an end, I am pleased to announce that Hon. John Baptist Nambeshe, Deputy President Eastern Region, will be taking over as acting President of the National Unity Platform,” he added.
Bobi request NUP leaders and supporters to offer support to Nambeshe.
“I wish him well and request all leaders and comrades to accord him the necessary support,” he added.
Nambeshe, who also serves as NUP’s Deputy President for the Eastern Region, assumes the role at a time when Bobi Wine remains outside the country.
Bobiw Wine went into hiding for about two months after the general elections and later fled to the United States, where he has since been staying. Before his departure, he appointed Dr. Zedriga to lead the party in an acting capacity.
The latest leadership change means Nambeshe will now oversee the day-to-day affairs of Uganda’s largest opposition party in Bobi Wine’s absence, as NUP continues its political activities under its acting leadership.
