The Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Betty Amongi has reported a worrying trend of men impregnating their girlfriends and single mothers and later abandoning them.

Speaking on Monday at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, Amongi said the number of cases reported to the ministry have gone up.

“Several complaints have been lodged against very educated, working-class men who impregnate and produce children outside marriage and want to dodge their responsibilities of providing support to their children have gone up,” Amongi said.

The minister explained that probation officers and Labour Ministry staff have continued to receive complaints about men failing to on their responsibilities of child care even after court rulings.

To this, she said many children end up being raised by single mothers without care and support.

“We appeal to men to take up the responsibility and provide for your children needs and enable them also enjoy the festive season,” Amongi said.

The minister however commended men who have remained committed to their parental roles, even in cases where some women have neglected their motherly duties.
