President Museveni has cleared the air about UPDF’s deployment in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Ugandan People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops have officially arrived in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in an expanded joint military operation with Congolese forces (FARDC).
Following the deployment, it was said by some sections of the media that UPDF had deployed to help FARDC fight M23.
However, in a statement on Thursday afternoon, President Museveni dismissed the claims.
“There was an item that said that Uganda had deployed troops in Eastern Congo to help the Congo government fight the M23 rebels. That is not true. Our presence in Congo, therefore, has nothing to do with fighting the M23 rebels,” he stated.
The president noted that with the deteriorating situation in Eastern Congo, the troops deployed in Lubero, near Butembo and Bunia, to the North of Operation Shuja’s operational area against ADF
He insisted that the solution to the conflict in Eastern DRC is for M23 rebels and President Felix Tshisekedi’s government to sit on a round table to negotiate.
