Absa Group and Visa have renewed their strategic partnership to accelerate the growth of secure, inclusive, and digitally driven financial ecosystems across Absa’s Regional Operations (ARO), which cover the bank’s presence outside South Africa.
The renewed agreement, signed at a formal ceremony in Johannesburg, marks a significant milestone in a long-standing collaboration that has helped shape the future of digital payments and financial inclusion across Africa.
Anchored in a shared ambition to modernise financial services for individuals and businesses, the partnership will deepen efforts in digital infrastructure development, SME empowerment, and customer-focused innovation in the Cards and Payments space.
“This regional expansion marks an exciting new chapter in our partnership with Absa — one that continues to challenge conventions and redefine what’s possible in financial services,” said Michael Berner, Visa’s Head of Southern and East Africa.
“We are united in our mission to expand digital access across Africa. Absa’s leadership in innovation is delivering measurable impact, and Visa is proud to support this journey with our global capabilities.”
Over the years, the collaboration has delivered a range of market-first solutions. These include the launch of Visa Direct, enabling both domestic and cross-border card-to-card payments, and the rollout of Visa Signature and Infinite metal cards, which introduced premium banking services with elevated lifestyle benefits.
Absa has also deployed Absa Pay issuer wallets, enhancing digital payment experiences — first introduced in Mauritius — and more recently, launched Visa Business Credit Cards tailored to meet the evolving needs of entrepreneurs and SMEs. These cards offer spending controls, exclusive business benefits, and access to Visa Spend Clarity Plus, making it the first such solution in Sub-Saharan Africa.
“In partnership with Visa, we are building a future-ready financial ecosystem that keeps pace with Africa’s dynamic economies,” said Saviour Chibiya, Chief Executive of Absa Regional Operations.
“Our strategy is deeply rooted in local insight. In every market, we work closely with communities to ensure that our financial solutions are relevant, responsive, and impactful.”
The strengthened partnership is expected to reinforce Absa’s position as a key enabler of financial inclusion and digital transformation on the continent.
