Everything is now set for the commencement of the public trial in the Ggaba daycare murder case, with both the Judiciary and Police confirming full preparedness for the proceedings.
Police have urged members of the public not to take the matter personally as the trial begins later today. Christopher Okello Onyum, 34, is accused of killing four children at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre earlier this month.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke said security has been significantly reinforced ahead of the public hearing to ensure safety and order.
“We have deployed appropriately and we appeal to all members of the public to remain calm and maintain order at the venue. This is a sensitive matter that affects many people, and we want the process to proceed in an orderly manner for those in attendance,” Rusoke said.
“We do not want people to take it personally when others defend the accused. These are court processes, and we must allow due process to take its course.”
Meanwhile, the Judiciary has confirmed that all arrangements are in place for the start of the trial, marking a significant development in Uganda’s justice system.
Earlier ,, the Principal Judge, Jane Frances Abodo, inspected the Gaba Community Church Grounds, which will host the Mobile High Court session.
The venue has been fully prepared to accommodate the special sitting, which will bring court proceedings directly into the community affected by the alleged crime.
The trial will be presided over by Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, who will oversee the proceedings under the Judiciary’s Mobile Courts Practice Directions issued by the Chief Justice.
This marks the first Mobile High Court criminal session to be held in Kampala, reflecting the Judiciary’s effort to enhance access to justice by bringing court services closer to the public, especially in high-profile cases of significant community impact.
Judiciary says the initiative is aimed at strengthening public confidence, improving transparency, and encouraging community engagement while ensuring adherence to legal procedures.
