National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, alias Bobi Wine, has expressed concern over the ongoing teachers’ strike that has now entered its third week, blaming government’s failure to address salary disparities.
While addressing rallies in Luuka and Kaliro districts on the second day of his campaign in Busoga sub-region, Kyagulanyi said the strike had left children out of school for weeks, something he described as “a tragedy caused by government neglect.”
“It is sad that our children have gone three weeks without studying because teachers are on industrial action caused by government’s failure to raise their pay. Once voted into power, such disappointments will be no more. I will ensure our children suffer no more but get the best education they deserve,” he told supporters.
Kyagulanyi, who was accompanied by his wife, Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, also pledged to revive food production in the region and streamline sugarcane growing by restoring ginneries and promoting value addition.
Barbie Kyagulanyi rallied Busoga residents to support her husband, promising that an NUP government would prioritize the welfare of the girl child.
“I am tired of teaching young girls how to make pads, of reminding them how to protect themselves from early pregnancies, and of pleading with them to stay in school. If you vote Bobi Wine into power, girls will have access to education, and families will be empowered to overcome poverty and lack of opportunities,” she said.
Bobi Wine further urged voters to identify with his party’s symbol: “Wherever you see an umbrella, please tick it,” he said.
According to his campaign schedule, Kyagulanyi will today take his message to Bugweri and Namutumba districts.
