Uganda made history on Monday night by storming the knockout stages of the African Nations Championship after holding South Africa to a 3 all draw.
The hosts taking the lead in the first half through Jude Ssemugabi were however pegged back by two goals in succession at the beginning of the second half .
The South Africans would later add a third goal to take the game to what seemed beyond reach.
However, two late penalties by Allan Okello and Rogers Torach rescued the Cranes to ensure a 3 all draw.
Okello scored an 88th minute penalty after Ivan Ahimbisibwe had been tripped in the box for the referee to point to the spot.
The Vipers midfielder made no mistake putting the ball in the back of the net.
A few minutes later, Uganda was at it again when the Video Assistant Referee awarded a penalty following a handball in the forbidden area.
The day’s captain made no mistake, putting the ball at the back of the net to ensure Uganda was at level with South Africa to send fans at the 40,000 -seater Namboole stadium into frenzy.
The late goals ensured Uganda rose from its ruins to storm the quarterfinals of the tournament for locally based players in Africa for the first time in history.
The point earned ensured Uganda finished top of Group C with six points, one above second placed Algeria.
