It will be a do-or-die for Uganda later today as the host nation lock horns with Niger in the 2024 edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
Coming into today’s game, the Ugandan team will be riding on the confidence of their emphatic 3-0 demolition of Guinea and the Cranes know ,victory today could catapult them to the top of the group and put them within touching distance of the knockout stages.
Reagan Mpande, Allan Okello, and Ivan Ahimbisibwe were the heroes in that win, and tactician Morley Byekwaso believes his side has the momentum to go back-to-back.
“This game means a lot to us,” Byekwaso said. “We appreciate the fan base and the energy, but mostly, I thank them for showing up in large numbers last time. It was my first time seeing such a big crowd behind us. We promise to give it our very best because winning this game would significantly boost our chances of advancing past the group stages.”
While hinting at possible tactical tweaks, the coach made it clear that selection would be based on the demands of the game.
“All games are different; each has its unique challenges and technical approach. I can’t promise the same lineup, but we might make a few changes depending on the opponent. The players who performed well last time will be given a chance tomorrow,” he explained.
Defender, Gavin Kizito, speaking alongside Byekwaso, warned against underestimating Niger, who sit bottom of the table with no points.
“We lost our first game and bounced back with a win in the second. It’s possible for Niger to do the same. We can’t take them for granted; we need to win this game,” he said.
“Yes, we are ready to make every minute on the pitch count. Every player in the camp is prepared, and we’re ready to take on Niger tomorrow.”
Byekwaso echoed his skipper’s caution but insisted his team is fired up. “The boys have high morale, even more so than last time. We know Niger will be eager to win, but we’re prepared to face them and secure the 3 points.”
Kick-off is set for 8:00 PM EAT at Mandela National Stadium, after the day’s earlier Group C fixture between South Africa and Guinea at 5:00 PM.
The Cranes wrap up their group campaign on Friday, August 18, against South Africa.
