The Engineers Registration Board (ERB) has cautioned individuals contesting for elective positions in the forthcoming national elections against the unlawful use of the professional title “Engineer” or prefix “Eng.” without proper registration.
In a public notice issued on Monday, the Board expressed concern over the increasing misuse of the title by candidates across various political affiliations, saying the practice misleads the public and undermines the integrity of the engineering profession.
“We have observed that several candidates are using the title Engineer on campaign posters and promotional materials without being registered with the Engineers Registration Board. Such individuals are not authorized to use this professional designation,” said Eng. Ronald Namugera, the Registrar of the Engineers Registration Board.
Eng. Namugera emphasized that, under the Engineers Registration Act, Cap 299, only those duly registered with the ERB are legally permitted to use the title Engineer or prefix Eng. He warned that unauthorized use of the title constitutes a criminal offence.
He further revealed that the Board, in a letter dated 21st July 2025 (Ref: ERB/8), had written to the Chairman of the Electoral Commission urging the Commission to verify with ERB the professional status of any person using the title Engineer during the nomination process.
“We call upon the Electoral Commission, political parties, and the general public to take note of this advisory and act against individuals unlawfully using the engineering title. This will help protect the integrity of the profession and ensure transparency in the electoral process,” Eng. Namugera added.
The Board has also directed members of the public to verify the authenticity of registered engineers through its official website www.erb.go.ug, the ERB offices at Plot 2, Gloucester Avenue, Kyambogo, or by scanning the QR code provided on the notice.
