The Uganda Rugby Union (URU), in partnership with Nile Breweries Uganda Limited through its flagship brand Nile Special, has officially launched the 2026 Uganda Rugby Premiership, setting the stage for a competitive season that begins on Saturday, February 7, 2026.
The Premiership, which will run for five months, will feature both men’s and women’s teams, reaffirming rugby’s growing profile in Uganda’s sporting landscape.
Speaking at the launch, organisers unveiled this season’s fan-centric theme, “Greatness at Play,” which positions supporters as the “16th Man” — a recognition of the critical role fans play in driving team performance and match-day atmosphere.
As the governing body of the sport, the Uganda Rugby Union said it remains committed to strengthening and professionalising rugby across the country. Nile Special, a long-time partner of Ugandan rugby, reiterated its support for the sport by focusing on enhancing fan engagement and celebrating the passion of supporters nationwide.
The 2026 campaign underscores the belief that success in rugby extends beyond the players on the pitch. Organisers noted that fans — through their chants, presence, and loyalty — provide the extra push that influences momentum and outcomes during matches.
Nile Special announced plans to roll out a digital-led fan engagement campaign throughout the season, aimed at amplifying supporter participation and recognising “Unmatched Fans” during match days. These initiatives will include interactive experiences, on-ground activations, and online engagement designed to place fans at the heart of the Premiership experience.
“Rugby greatness does not exist on the pitch alone. It lives in the stands, in the chants, belief, and passion of the fans. This season, we are celebrating the supporter as the 16th Man — the extra force that lifts teams and turns matches into unforgettable moments,” said Wangechi Gitahi, Head of Marketing at Nile Breweries Uganda.

The Uganda Rugby Premiership remains the country’s top-tier domestic rugby competition, showcasing elite talent across both leagues while contributing to national pride and the sport’s long-term development. URU and Nile Special said their partnership continues to strengthen the rugby ecosystem, from elite competition to fan culture and community engagement.
With fierce rivalries, emerging talent, and high-energy match days expected, organisers have called on Ugandans to actively support their teams throughout the season and embrace their role as the 16th Man.
