Police have arrested the Head of Mobilisation at the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), Habib Buwembo, just days before the 2026 general elections.
Buwembo was arrested alongside Ronald Katabala and Josephine Nakakembo.
According to police, the three suspects are currently in custody and will be produced before court in due course.
“The Uganda Police Force would like to confirm the arrest of Buwembo Habib, Katabala Ronald, and Nakakembo Josephine. The three are currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court in due course,” said Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala.
The police statement came hours after NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, alleged on social media that Buwembo had been abducted.
“We have been informed of the abduction of our Head of Mobilisation, comrade Buwembo Habib, this afternoon on Masaka Road. He was abducted alongside comrades Jamila Wa Bobi and Batabaale Ronald, who is also a candidate,” Kyagulanyi wrote.
Police have not yet explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest, and it remains unclear why the names of the individuals accompanying Buwembo differ between the police statement and the account given by NUP leadership.
More details are expected to be released as investigations continue.
