Kasese Catholic Diocese will take the lead in the 2026 Uganda Martyrs’ Day celebrations at Namugongo, stepping into the national spotlight for the first time in 21 years.
The last time it animated the pilgrimage was in 2005, under the late Rt. Rev. Egidio Nkaijanabwo.
Preparations are already underway following the launch of a 13-member central organizing committee in Kasese Municipality.
Chaired by Rev. Fr. John Baptist Kule, the team will oversee all planning and mobilization ahead of the June 3, 2026 event.
Church leadership has framed the task as both a sacred duty and a rare opportunity for Kasese to showcase its unity, cultural identity, and capacity to deliver on a national platform.
The celebrations are expected to draw thousands of pilgrims, placing the district in the national and regional spotlight.
Uganda Martyrs’ Day is marked annually at Namugongo, rotating among the country’s four ecclesiastical provinces—Kampala, Tororo, Gulu, and Mbarara.
Kasese, will take over from Lugazi Diocese, the host of the 2025 celebrations.
With the organizing committee in place, the focus now shifts to mobilizing resources, engaging communities, and coordinating with Church institutions to deliver a colorful, spiritually enriching, and nationally memorable celebration.
For Kasese, the event is being embraced as more than a commemoration—it is a moment of revival, pride, and renewed faith.
