Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and murder of a 52-year-old woman, even after her family reportedly paid part of the ransom demanded by her abductors.
The deceased, identified as Lydia Babirye Ssengedo, a resident of Kigowa in Ntinda, was reported missing on 4 June 2026 after boarding a taxi in Busunju, Wakiso District. Her family later filed a report at Old Kampala Police Station.
According to sources close to the family, the kidnappers used the victim’s phone to demand a ransom of Shs19 million for her release. The family managed to raise and pay Shs8 million, but the victim was not freed.
“A joint security team launched investigations and managed to arrest several suspects linked to this case,” said ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy PRO of Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Police have since arrested two suspects, identified as Shafiq Kagga and Abubakar Ntege, in connection with the murder.
Detectives tracked the suspects to Kiteredde Village in Kakiri Town Council, Wakiso District, where the victim’s body was discovered at Ntege’s residence.
The body was found in a decomposing state, wrapped in a mattress cover and tied with ropes. Investigators also reportedly discovered a freshly dug grave within the compound, suggesting an attempt to conceal the crime.
“The scene was processed and the body conveyed to KCCA City Mortuary for postmortem examination. Two suspects remain in custody as investigations continue,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
Police say inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and murder, including the involvement of other potential suspects.
