The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Force (UPDF) has appointed Lt Col Nathan Akankunda as the new commander of the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) in Somalia.
Lt Col Akankunda replaces Lt Col Peter Barigye, who has completed his tour of duty leading UNGU XI.
The handover ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Raisedon Zenenga, who thanked the outgoing troops for their dedicated service.
“Members of UNGU XI have honoured the United Nations, their country Uganda and the UPDF with their dedication, discipline and professionalism. Your effective safeguarding of United Nations personnel, facilities and assets in Mogadishu has enabled the UN family to deliver on its mandate,” he said.
Mr Zenenga said the calm security situation within the UN camp showed the team’s alertness and good coordination with forces under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The AUSSOM Force Commander, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, praised Lt Col Barigye and his team for successfully completing their mission.
“You can walk with your heads held high because you did it. You have finished your mission with dignity and honour, and you have represented Uganda well,” said Lt Gen Kavuma.
In his remarks, Lt Col Barigye thanked the UPDF leadership for the trust given to him, saying his team served with commitment and professionalism.
Taking over command, Lt Col Akankunda congratulated the outgoing team and pledged to build on their achievements.
He promised to diligently execute the UNGU mandate and called for continued support and cooperation from the Force Commander and the UN community in Somalia.
The ceremony was attended by officers from AUSSOM Sector One, as well as members of UNGU XI and UNGU XII.
