A senior health official in Lugazi Municipality has been charged with fraud in connection with an alleged scheme to sell government jobs.
Dr. Saadi Wataba, the Municipal Medical Officer of Health, was on Tuesday arraigned before the Mukono Chief Magistrate’s Court by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
According to prosecutors, Dr. Saadi is accused of conspiring with two other officials, Mubarak Sekikubo, LC III Chairperson for Nakisunga Sub-County, and Ronald Mugerwa Saaku, the Probation and Welfare Officer for Lugazi Municipality to defraud a job applicant of shs38 million between January and June 2025.
Investigators allege that the trio solicited the money from Dr. Mukisa George William with promises that they would influence the Mukono District Service Commission to secure him a position as a medical officer in the district.
The funds were reportedly presented as facilitation for commission members, but authorities say the claims were false and intended to deceive the applicant.
He was remanded to government prison.
The suspects face charges of obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud, in what authorities describe as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle networks involved in the sale of public jobs.
The court session marks yet another high-profile prosecution arising from a broader government crackdown on corruption within recruitment processes in local government and public service institutions.
