Roadside market vendors in Luwero District have been encouraged to stabilize and grow their household incomes following a financial support initiative from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Princess Pauline Nassolo, Senior Presidential Advisor In-charge of the Elderly, delivered the President’s business booster package to vendors at Balikyejusa Market. Over 640 vendors received cash grants of Shs 100,000 each to help expand their enterprises, which include agricultural produce, roasted gonja, meat, and beverages.
Speaking during the event, Princess Nassolo highlighted the President’s call for citizens to engage actively in Uganda’s money economy through sectors such as commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT.
“H.E the President always advises us to join the money economy through the four sectors; commercial agriculture, manufacturing, services, and ICT. If we heed his message, we will be able to improve and stabilize our household income, thus creating wealth,” she said.
The Senior Advisor revealed that many vendors had not previously benefited from key government programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, prompting the President to send this direct capital injection to support their businesses while awaiting further assistance.
“H.E the President has sent us to deliver this money to you directly. It’s meant to boost your businesses. Use it well,” she urged.
Vendors were also advised to hold leaders accountable to ensure access to government services and to vote wisely for leaders who can deliver on their promises, specifically endorsing the NRM party.
Ms. Flora Kabibi, Special Presidential Assistant on Women Affairs, urged the vendors to avoid politicking and instead focus on their livelihoods.
“As we head to the political season, vote for your candidates then go back and work. Don’t involve yourself in politicking,” she said.
“H.E the President always encourages us to work so that we improve our livelihoods. He has even extended financial support to boost your businesses.”
Market leadership expressed gratitude for the support. Mr. Nyombi Yakub Zziwa, Chairperson of Balikyejusa Market and the NRM Workers League in Luwero, said the funding would significantly help them grow their enterprises.
“We thank the NRM government for its numerous poverty alleviation programs aimed at uplifting the lives of Ugandans,” he said.
Other beneficiaries, including Vice Chairperson Mr. Kayindo Musisi Ali and vendors Sylvia Nakibuule, Sandra Namugenyi, and pineapple trader Nelson Ssimbwa, expressed heartfelt appreciation and pledged continued political support for President Museveni.
“We are going to vote for President Museveni again and again,” Namugenyi affirmed.
“I can’t thank you enough apart from praying for your good health. We pray that God enables you to lead and serve Ugandans for more years,” Ssimbwa added.
