Members of Parliament have agreed to deduct Shs 500,000 from each MP to support the education of the daughter of the late Kalangala Woman MP, Hellen Nakimuli.
The resolution was moved by Sports Minister Peter Ogwang during a special parliamentary sitting held in honour of the late Nakimuli, who passed away on Sunday following unsuccessful surgery.
The House agreed to the proposal as MPs paid tribute to the fallen legislator, describing her as a dedicated leader who served both Parliament and her community with commitment.
During the sitting, Speaker Anita Annet Among read a message from Kibuli Secondary School where the daughter study from announcing that, through Bukedea Comprehensive School, she has paid school fees for the late’s child up to Senior Four.
She also announced that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) would also contribute Shs10 million to support the bereaved family.
In his remarks, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Chris Baryomunsi, cautioned against what he described as the growing trend of celebrating the deaths of prominent people in society.
He warned that such behaviour was un-Ugandan and could force government to consider stricter regulations on social media use if it continues.
The special sitting highlighted Nakimuli’s public service record, noting her earlier role as Community Development Officer in Kalangala District from 2013 to 2020 before joining Parliament in 2021.
While in Parliament, she served in several shadow cabinet roles, including Shadow Minister for Agriculture and later Shadow Minister for ICT and Anti-Corruption.
Nakimuli, a member of the National Unity Platform, was also known for her advocacy for island communities, women’s empowerment, and her active involvement in sports, where she captained Parliament’s volleyball team.
The House described her as a committed legislator whose contribution to public service will be remembered.
Nakimuli, will be laid to rest today Thursday at her ancestral home in Lunyoolya Village, Luwero District.
