President Museveni on Tuesday bid farewell to the outgoing Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, Zhang Lizhong, who paid a courtesy call on him at his country home in Kisozi, Gomba District.
During the meeting, President Museveni congratulated Ambassador Lizhong upon completing his tour of duty in Uganda and wished him well in his next assignment.
“I wish you well in your next assignment,” the President said.
Museveni expressed appreciation for the continued strengthening of bilateral relations between Uganda and China, noting the growth in trade between the two countries. He revealed that Uganda’s exports to China have risen to USD 138 million, though he emphasized that there remains significant potential for further growth.
“I am happy to note that Uganda’s exports to China have increased to USD 138 million. However, this is still not enough, and we should be able to do much more,” he said.
The President also welcomed the Chinese government’s decision to remove taxes on Ugandan exports, describing it as a major boost to Uganda’s trade, industrialisation and wealth creation agenda.
On investment, Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to supporting Chinese businesses operating in the country, noting that the government has consistently backed Chinese investments and will continue to do so.
In response, Ambassador Zhang Lizhong thanked President Museveni and the Ugandan government for the cooperation and support extended to him throughout his tenure, describing Uganda–China relations as warm and productive.
