President Museveni has pledged to add two more ferries to strengthen transport services for residents of Kalangala District’s island communities.
The commitment was made on Monday during his campaign tour in support of the ruling party’s candidate, Idah Nabayiga, ahead of the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
Addressing residents, Museveni said government intends to expand lake transport beyond the existing ferry services operating on the Nakiwogo–Lutoboka and Bukakata–Kalangala routes.
“We’ve had the Bukakata and Nakiwogo ferries, but now as we go further we are going to add two more ferries,” Museveni said.
According to the President, the additional ferries will raise the total number serving the area to four and are expected to improve connectivity between the islands and mainland communities.
He explained that one of the planned routes will operate from Entebbe through Kasenyi, Jana, Buweke and Lwanabatya to Lurindi via Mwena, while another will connect Entebbe to Kyamuswa across Lake Victoria.
Museveni also promised wider government investment in Kalangala, including extension of electricity, improvements in health and education services, and continued support for wealth creation initiatives such as palm oil growing, the Four-Acre Model and sustainable fishing.
“Today, I campaigned in Kalangala in support of the NRM Woman MP candidate, Idah Nabayiga, and urged the people to vote for her so we can strengthen coordination and accelerate service delivery,” Museveni said.
The Kalangala District Woman MP by-election is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, and the contest is between NRM’s Idah Nabayiga and NUP’s Irene Nampala, sister to the late Hellen Nakimuli, who died weeks after being re-elected to the seat.
