President Yoweri Museveni has pledged that Buhweju District will finally receive a tarmac road and a district hospital.
Speaking at a rally at Engaju Seed Secondary School playground on Saturday, Museveni announced plans to tarmac the Bwizibwera–Nyakambu–Nsiika–Nyakashaka–Nyakabirizi road, with the China Railway 18th Bureau Group securing shs30 billion for compensation to allow immediate construction.
The president also promised to upgrade Nsiika HCIV to a general hospital, elevate Engaju HCIII to HCIV, and construct new health centre IIIs in Kashenyi-Kajani, Nyakaziba, Rubengye, and Rwengwe Sub-Counties.
Museveni urged the population to engage in government programs while prioritizing the most pressing needs, noting that not all projects can be handled at once.
Addressing agriculture, he advised households with small landholdings, averaging 0.8 acres, to focus on high-value crops and enterprises rather than tea, maize, or sugarcane.
He cited Richard Nyakaana from Rwengaju village as an example of success, earning shs120 million annually from 1.2 acres through zero-grazing dairy, chicken eggs, livestock feed, and manure production.
“One acre of tea cannot match this income; smallholders should consider dairy and high-value crops,” Museveni said, emphasizing enterprise selection for profitability.
On tea challenges, he explained that global fertiliser shortages, road conditions, and quality standards have depressed prices.
“I will deal with this. I will work on this but for only those will at least five acres and beyond. I have put aside shs360 billion for large scale farmers to borrow to buy both seeds and fertilisers as well as those who tea factories broke down.”
