The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has launched a national identification enrolment and renewal drive for Ugandans living and UPDF troops serving in Somalia
The exercise aims to renew expired National IDs and register new applicants in line with the Registration of Persons Act (ROPA) 2015.
Speaking during the launch, AUSSOM Force Commander Lt Gen Sam Kavuma urged all Ugandans in Somalia to take part in the ongoing exercise.
“I encourage every Ugandan here to come forward and renew their National ID. It is a vital document that connects you to your country,” he said.
Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, Commander of Sector One in Somalia, welcomed the initiative, saying it ensures no Ugandan is left behind.
“We thank NIRA and UPDF leadership for considering troops in mission areas. Renew your IDs early so you can continue enjoying the services linked to the national identification system, including voting verification,” he said.
Col Richard Kukundakwe, who is leading the NIRA team in Somalia, said the ongoing national campaign targets over 15.8 million Ugandans with expired IDs and 15 million children due for first-time registration.
“This exercise supports national planning, security, and service delivery. Special Interest Groups such as the UPDF are equally entitled to renew and obtain IDs like any other Ugandans,” he explained.
He added that for troops and civilians abroad, NIRA is using a secure outreach model to ensure inclusivity.
The 12-day exercise is expected to register and renew IDs for more than 10,000 Ugandans, both military and civilian, serving in Somalia.
