MTN Uganda has said mobile money restrictions remain in force under a directive from the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), with no clear timeline for the full restoration of services, particularly cash withdrawals.
The telecom operator made the clarification in response to a user on X who inquired about when mobile money withdrawals would resume.
“Mobile Money restrictions are still in place as per the UCC directive. There is no defined timeline for full restoration at the moment. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” MTN Uganda said.
While some mobile money services have gradually resumed, withdrawals remain the most affected. Users can largely send money, but cash withdrawals at agent points have been inconsistent, leaving many customers unable to access their funds.
The restrictions stem from a UCC directive issued on January 13, 2026, which suspended mobile money transactions and internet access ahead of the January 15 general elections. Authorities said the shutdown was intended to safeguard security during the polls.
Although internet access was partially restored on January 17, 2026, mobile money services—especially withdrawals—remain limited more than a week after the elections.
The prolonged disruption has significantly affected daily economic activity, particularly for businesses and individuals who rely heavily on digital platforms for transactions and communication.
Traders and mobile money agents have been among the worst affected, reporting reduced business activity and loss of income.
As of now, UCC has not announced when mobile money services will be fully restored, leaving millions of users uncertain about when they will regain full access to their funds.
