National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate Idah Nabayiga has been declared the duly elected Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District following the conclusion of the district by-election.
According to the official results announced by Kalangala District Returning Officer Ronald Agaba at around 4:00 a.m., Nabayiga secured 12,642 votes to defeat National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Irene Nampala, who garnered 7,474 votes.
Independent candidate Sharifa Babirye received 244 votes, while Hellen Flavia Nagawa polled 217 votes and Agness Nasuuna obtained 34 votes.
Electoral Commission figures indicate that a total of 21,038 ballot papers were counted during the exercise. Of these, 20,611 were valid votes cast for candidates, 427 ballot papers were invalid, and 67 were spoilt.
Despite the competitive race, voter turnout remained low. Kalangala District has 45,246 registered voters, but less than half of the electorate participated in the by-election.
Several National Unity Platform leaders and supporters attributed the low turnout to the heavy deployment of security personnel, both in uniform and plain clothes, across the islands during the election period.
Nabayiga’s victory fills the parliamentary seat that fell vacant following the death of former Kalangala District Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away on February 4, 2026, shortly after being re-elected to Parliament.
The by-election attracted candidates from the NRM, NUP, and independent ranks, with campaigns largely focused on service delivery, livelihoods, fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure development in the island district.
With her victory, Nabayiga becomes the new Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District and is expected to serve the remainder of the parliamentary term.
