The National Unity Platform (NUP) has picked Irene Nampala, sister to the late Hellen Nakimuli, as its official flag bearer for the Kalangala District Woman MP by-election.
The announcement was made on Thursday at the party headquarters in Makerere Kavule during the unveiling of NUP’s 12th Parliamentary leadership team.
Speaking at the event, the party’s Election Management Committee chairperson, Harriet Chemutai, said Nampala emerged victorious after a competitive selection process.
“We received 14 applications from women interested in carrying the NUP flag. Thirteen candidates underwent vetting and a ground survey, and Nampala emerged as the best candidate with 68.2% support,” Chemutai said.
Nampala was officially handed the party flag by NUP Deputy President Lina Zedriga, who urged party members to rally behind her ahead of the by-election.
The seat fell vacant following the death of Kalangala District Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away on April 19, barely two months after her re-election. She died following an unsuccessful surgery at Alexandra Hospital in Kampala.
According to the Ugandan Constitution, the Electoral Commission is required to organise a by-election within 60 days after a parliamentary seat falls vacant due to death, resignation, or a court ruling.
Nominations for the Kalangala Woman MP by-election are scheduled for June 4 and 5, campaigns will run from June 8 to 22, while polling day is set for June 24, 2026.
