Police in Kampala have arrested Mugabi Hakim, popularly known as “Younger,” a well-known pickpocket who has been operating along Luwum Street.
The arrest took place on 12 December 2025 at approximately 12:00 pm during a targeted operation around the Mutaasa Kafeero area.
The arrest is part of a broader effort by the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) to dismantle criminal gangs that have been preying on the public, particularly in busy urban areas.
According to SP Racheal Kawala, the KMP spokesperson, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to break criminal networks within the city.
“Our operations continue, especially as we enter the festive season, in a bid to combat crime,” SP Kawala said.
Police have recently arrested several individuals involved in theft, robbery, and other criminal activities targeting ordinary Ugandans. These operations aim to ensure that members of the public can move freely and conduct their businesses without fear.
The ongoing crackdown has led to the arrest of multiple gang members across Kampala in recent months, particularly those involved in pickpocketing, motorcycle thefts, and street robberies.
Police have also recovered stolen property, including mobile phones, cash, and motorcycles, linked to these criminal gangs.
The arrest of Younger is seen as another success in KMP’s ongoing mission to restore safety and security on Kampala’s streets, especially during the festive season when criminal activity typically increases.
