Police have explained the circumstances surrounding a viral video showing armed security officers firing shots into the air at Kisekka Market, saying the gunfire was intended to disperse a violent crowd that attempted to block the arrest of suspects.

According to Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke, the incident occurred on Monday, July 20, 2026, at about 6:00 p.m. in Nakivubo Cell, Nakasero III Ward, Kampala Central Business District (CBD).

“We have taken note of a viral video circulating on social media showing armed security officers firing shots into the air,” Kituuma said in a statement.

He explained that a team of security officers had gone to Original Kiseka Spare Centre in Kisekka Market to arrest suspected offenders when the situation turned chaotic.

“During the operation, a group of individuals turned violent and attempted to obstruct the lawful arrest of the suspects. In order to disperse the unruly crowd and restore order, the officers fired warning shots into the air,” Kituuma said.

He added that the situation was later brought under control, enabling the security team to complete the operation.

“The officers successfully arrested two suspects,” Kituuma said.

The police statement comes after videos of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting public concern over the use of firearms during the operation.

Police maintain that the warning shots were necessary to restore order and ensure the lawful arrest of the suspects.
