Police have warned members of the public to be on the lookout of power vandals whom he said have now changed tactics by tampering with power transformers through a criminal practice known as “tap changing.”
According to police, the rise in such activities is becoming a serious threat to communities and public safety, especially in areas such as Bunamwaya, Kyengera, Nabingo, Gayaza, Kabanyoro in Wakiso District, and Nakibanga in Mityana District.
“We have received increasing concerns from citizens regarding the vandalism of electricity infrastructure, specifically the tampering with transformers through a practice known as ‘tap changing. Some individuals engage in this criminal activity and then demand payment from entire villages to restore power,” he said.
The disturbing trend has seen entire communities held at ransom by vandals who sabotage electricity supply and then extort money in exchange for power restoration.
In addition to transformer tampering, Rusoke revealed that uncertified electricians are illegally shifting village connections from unstable to stable lines, a practice that not only undermines national infrastructure but also puts lives and property at risk.
“These unsanctioned activities, along with the theft of electricity infrastructure, are illegal and will be dealt with decisively. We will also pursue those who procure stolen electrical materials,” Rusoke added.
The police confirmed that they are actively pursuing individuals involved in these offenses, working in close coordination with the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) and local leaders.
The law, Rusoke warned, is very clear and harsh on such crimes.
“The law provides for severe punishments for these offenses, including fines of up to one billion Ugandan shillings and imprisonment for up to 15 years. These measures are intended to deter criminal activities and protect essential public services,” he said.
The police have urged members of the public to report suspicious individuals or incidents related to electricity vandalism immediately, whether to the nearest police station, UEDCL, or local leaders.
“We call upon all citizens to cooperate with security agencies in safeguarding our electricity infrastructure and ensuring continuous power supply for all,” Rusoke appealed.
