Court in Rukungiri has remanded a 31-year-old man to Rukungiri Government Prison over charges of defiling an 11-year-old girl.
The suspect identified as Akim Murangyira, appeared before court on Thursday.
The alleged incident occurred in 2024 at Ruhiita Cell, Burombe Parish, Ruhinda Sub-County, Rukungiri District. The suspect reportedly went into hiding and was only arrested last week on Tuesday.
Presiding over the case, Grade One Magistrate Gonzaga Mbalangu did not take Murangyira’s plea, explaining that the case is capital in nature and can only be tried by the High Court.
He was remanded until 23rd June 2026 as investigations continue.
Aidah Baraaza, the victim’s grandmother, said she rushed her granddaughter to Ruhinda Police Station to report the matter and later took her to a clinic, where staff confirmed injuries and recommended treatment.
Tumwesigye Abert, the LC1 Chairman of Ruhiita Cell, condemned the act and called for justice. The grandmother also appealed to President Museveni and authorities to ensure the culprit faces the law.
According the 2025 Police Annual crime report, a total of 10,492 cases of defilement were reported, down from 12,312 in 2024, representing a 14.8% decrease.
