A road crash involving a YY Company bus is feared to have claimed multiple lives and left several others injured on Monday evening in Buikwe District.
The fatal crash occurred at around 5:00 PM along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Makindu Village.
The Scania vehicle, registration number UAV 701C, was en route from Katosi to Jinja when the driver reportedly lost control, causing the bus to overturn before bursting into flames.
Police have confirmed that several people perished in the blaze, although the exact number of casualties remains unclear as authorities work to identify the victims.
Many of the injured were quickly rushed to Kawolo Hospital, St. Francis Lwanga Hospital, and other nearby health facilities for emergency treatment.
In an official statement, SP Kananura Michael, the Chief Licensing Officer (CLO) of the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety confirmed the road crash saying it involved a Scania motor vehicle belonging to YY company.
“We confirm a single fatal road crash that occurred today, May 5, 2025, at approximately 5:00 PM in Makindu Village, along the Kisoga–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District.”
“The crash involved a Scania motor vehicle, registration number UAV 701C, belonging to YY Company. The vehicle overturned and caught fire, resulting in the loss of lives, who are yet to be identified, and injuries to multiple passengers.”
He added that police and emergency services are actively working at the scene to extinguish the fire and retrieve the bodies of those who perished in the crash.
“We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available,” SP Kananura assured.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, though preliminary reports suggest speeding may have been a factor.
