A security guard who claimed his firearm had been stolen while he slept has been arrested after a police sniffer dog tracked the weapon to a tractor where it had been hidden at a Chinese road construction camp in Bunamwaya, Makindye-Ssabagabo.
Four other guards attached to the same security company were also arrested and are being held at Katwe Police as investigations continue.
According to Police, Charles Chandiga, a guard deployed by Capital Guard, reported on Tuesday morning that he had fallen asleep while on duty and woke up to find his firearm loaded with five rounds of ammunition missing.
The matter was reported to Kikumbi Police Station, which deployed the K9 Unit to investigate.
Police said sniffer dog Sophia was introduced at the spot where Chandiga claimed to have slept.
“The dog picked up the scent and began tracking. It moved for about 20 metres before approaching one of the tractors, where it circled around and sat down, indicating the presence of the scent,” Police said.
Chinese construction workers opened the locked tractor, where officers recovered the missing firearm together with the five rounds of ammunition.
The sniffer dog was then reintroduced inside the tractor and continued tracking for about 100 metres to the guards’ living quarters.
“Among the several rooms occupied by the guards, the dog went straight into a room belonging to Chandiga Charles, the very security guard who had reported the firearm missing,” Police said.
Chandiga and four fellow night guards were arrested for further questioning as Police continue investigating the circumstances under which the firearm was hidden.
