Police in Mukono District have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Senior Six student at Seeta High School, Mbalala Campus, who is believed to have drowned in the school’s swimming pool on Sunday evening.
The deceased, identified as Kevin Nsamba, 21, reportedly drowned at around 5:30 PM shortly after participating in a football match with fellow students. According to police, Nsamba and a group of students ran to the school swimming pool, where he is alleged to have jumped into the deep end.
“At the time, there were trainees in the pool under the supervision of a trainer or lifeguard. Nsamba reportedly jumped into the deep end and was not seen again,” said Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire.
Nsamba’s absence was noticed later that evening after a movie session. When fellow students could not locate him, they alerted the dormitory captain, who escalated the matter to the chief warden and eventually to the school principal. The incident was formally reported to police on Monday at around midday.
A case of suspected drowning was registered at Mbalala Police Station before being referred to Mukono Central Police Station for further handling. A team comprising the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID), scene of crime officers (SOCOs), fire and rescue services, and forensic experts visited the scene and began investigations.
“The student’s body was retrieved from the pool and taken to Mulago City Mortuary for a postmortem examination,” Owoyesigyire confirmed. “The swimming pool trainer has been arrested to assist with ongoing investigations.”
Preliminary findings indicate that a pool attendant was present at the time of the incident. Police are also reviewing CCTV footage from the school as part of the inquiry.
Authorities say they are awaiting the postmortem results and other critical evidence before providing further updates.
The school has not issued an official statement, but police say more details will be shared as investigations progress.
