Two men have been arrested for impersonating staff of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) at the Kampala Central Division Office during the ongoing mass enrolment and mass renewal exercise.
According to NIRA, the suspects infiltrated the registration centre and posed as registration assistants, approaching applicants and demanding money in exchange for fast-tracked services and quicker collection of national identity cards.
The suspects were exposed after members of the public alerted NIRA officials at the centre. Officers responded promptly and apprehended the two men as they attempted to leave the premises.
NIRA confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be charged accordingly.
The authority has reiterated that all NIRA services under the mass enrolment and mass renewal exercise are provided free of charge.
“There is no fast-tracking, no special connections, and no middlemen. Anyone asking for money in exchange for NIRA services is a fraudster and should be reported immediately,” NIRA said.
Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant and to cooperate with authorities by reporting any suspected fraud at registration centres.
