UPDF soldiers from the 5th Infantry Division have conducted a 30-kilometre route march across parts of the Lango and East Acholi sub-regions as part of ongoing efforts to maintain combat readiness.
The exercise was aimed at assessing troops’ physical fitness, endurance, teamwork and overall preparedness for current and future military operations.
Personnel drawn from the Division Headquarters and various brigades operating within the division’s area of responsibility took part in the march.
Addressing soldiers at the Division Headquarters, the Deputy Commander of the 5th Infantry Division, Col Gai Fraser Mpadwa, underscored the importance of continuous training in building a professional, disciplined and mission-ready force.
“The route march is intended to test the physical fitness and battle readiness of our troops. It is during peacetime that we prepare for war and other military operations,” Col Mpadwa said.
He noted that regular training, coupled with ideological orientation, discipline, integrity and professionalism, remains vital in preparing soldiers to meet diverse operational demands.
According to Col Mpadwa, sustained preparation strengthens command and control, builds confidence among troops and enhances operational effectiveness, particularly for infantry formations.
Similar 30-kilometre route marches were conducted simultaneously by UPDF units in Lira City, Lamwo, Kitgum and Abim districts, within their respective areas of operation, under the supervision of their commanders.
The exercise was attended by the 5th Infantry Division Intelligence Officer, Col Elvis Kaliba, the Division Training Officer, heads of departments, as well as other officers and enlisted personnel.
