The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has officially flagged off UN Guard Unit (UNGU) XII, which will deploy to Somalia for peace support operations under the United Nations mandate. The ceremony took place at the International Peace and Support Training Centre (IPSO-TC) in Ssingo, marking the culmination of intensive pre-deployment preparations.
Addressing the troops, Deputy Commander Land Forces Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga emphasized discipline, professionalism, and the responsibility of representing Uganda internationally.
Drawing on his previous experience as a contingent commander in Somalia, Maj Gen Ssemwanga highlighted the operational challenges, including the ongoing threat posed by the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.
Col Moses Nabaasa, IPSO-TC Commandant, reported that all pre-deployment training objectives were achieved, noting that most international modules were conducted entirely by UPDF instructors, reflecting the growing capacity of Uganda’s peacekeeping training institutions.
Troops were reminded to maintain combat readiness, high morale, teamwork, and strict financial and personal discipline.
Lt Col Nathan Akankunda, commander of UNGU XII, assured that his team is fully prepared to execute their mandate with professionalism and uphold the national flag with honor.
The event was attended by UPDF officers and local community representatives, including Ms Doreen Ayebare, LC1 Chairperson of Kakoola North, who praised the UPDF’s commitment to civil-military engagement and social outreach.
The UN Guard Unit (UNGU) is part of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) frameworks.
The troops protect UN personnel, installations, and convoys in Somalia as well as providing security for UN humanitarian operations.
