Troops of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have jointly captured the strategic town of Darusalam in southern Somalia from the militant group Al-Shabaab.
The operation was conducted alongside the Somalia National Army (SNA) in the Lower Shabelle region as part of ongoing offensives aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab strongholds in southern Somalia.
Military officials said the capture of Darusalam follows the recent liberation of Mubarak town in a series of coordinated operations targeting insurgent positions in the region.
Jackson Kayanja, the Sector One Contingent Commander leading the mission, said the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of joint military efforts between Ugandan and Somali forces.
“The liberation of Darusalam demonstrates the strength of our forces and our commitment to restoring stability and peace in Somalia,” said Brig. Gen. Kayanja.
Owiny Akena, commander of Battle Group 44, said securing the town is expected to significantly improve security for local residents and facilitate humanitarian operations.
He noted that controlling Darusalam will allow the safe delivery of humanitarian aid and strengthen the presence of government authorities in the area.
“Securing Darusalam will improve safety for civilians, enable humanitarian aid delivery and strengthen government presence in the area,” Col. Akena said, adding that joint forces would continue to maintain pressure on insurgents to prevent them from regrouping.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the operation, expressing hope that improved security will allow economic and social activities to resume after years of instability.
