The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has said the UPDF is set to deploy in South Sudan to fight along the government forces.
“We have been confined to South Sudan for over a year. But in co-ordination with the Sudanese Army, under the leadership of H.E Abdel Fattah al Burhan we are going to expand our operations into North Sudan,” he said in a post on X.
While Ugandans troops have been in South Sudan since last year on the request of President Salva Kiir, Gen Muhoozi said there is an arrangement for the UPDF to also deploy in Sudan.
Details of the deployment are not clear but it seems the UPDF will fight alongside the Sudanese army against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) headed by Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), headed by Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, better known as “Hemedti”.
More than 150,000 people have died in the conflict across the country, and about 12 million have fled their homes according to the United Nations.
The RSF was formed in 2013 with its origins in the notorious Janjaweed militia that brutally fought rebels in Darfur.
The Sudanese army has on several occasions accuses the UAE of backing the RSF.
