Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has intercepted a truck carrying 5,820 boxes of unstamped Express Vodka, dealing a major blow to tax evasion along key transport routes.
The consignment, transported by Elebu Logistics Ltd, was intercepted by the URA Central Region Enforcement Team while en route to Arua.
Each box contained 24 bottles of 200ml, all of which were found without Digital Tax Stamps (DTS).
URA noted that Digital Tax Stamps are a mandatory requirement for excisable goods, as they contain security features and traceable codes designed to prevent counterfeiting, enhance tax compliance, and promote fair competition.
The absence of the stamps constitutes a violation of Uganda’s excise tax laws and undermines manufacturers who comply with their tax obligations.
“We are committed to combating tax evasion, protecting government revenue, and ensuring compliance within the excisable goods sector,” said Stanley Kabyemera, Manager of DT Enforcement, Central Region.
URA added that investigations are ongoing to establish liability and ensure that appropriate penalties are applied in accordance with the law.
The authority has reiterated its warning to manufacturers, transporters, and distributors to fully comply with tax stamp requirements or risk enforcement action.
