Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has intercepted 576 cartons of smuggled mobile phones, comprising 28,627 devices, in Kyanja, a fast-growing suburb in Nakawa Division, Kampala.
The seized consignment included both smartphones and button phones and was intercepted by URA enforcement officers during an operation targeting the illegal supply of high-value electronics.
According to URA, the phones lacked proper import documentation and had not been cleared through customs, making them uncustomed goods under Ugandan law.
“The interception is part of a broader crackdown targeting high-value electronics smuggled through porous border points and distributed in Kampala’s busy phone markets,” URA said in a statement.
Investigations have been launched to identify the owners of the seized phones and dismantle the smuggling network involved in the operation.
URA said individuals found culpable will face charges related to tax evasion, possession of uncustomed goods, and engaging in illegal trade.
The operation underscores renewed efforts by URA, working with partner enforcement agencies, to strengthen surveillance and curb the influx of smuggled consumer electronics into the country.
Authorities have urged traders and importers to ensure that all goods are properly declared, cleared and taxed to avoid legal action.
