The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said that opposition strongman, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine was a creation of the current NRM government.
In a post on his X account on Sunday, Gen Muhoozi said Bobi Wine was created to help them tame the growing popularity of four- time presidential candidate, Dr.Kizza Besigye who was then the leading opposition figure during that time.
“It was actually our idea (me and other Generals). We convinced Mzee that we can use Kabobi to remove Besigye from being kingpin of the opposition,” Gen Muhoozi said.
He however said Kyagulanyi would later turn against them.
“ After we supported him with alot of money (and he succeeded) he started abusing us,” he said.
Bobi Wine has however not yet responded to the claims by Gen Muhoozi.
Before joining politics, Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine cut out a role for himself as “Ghetto President” as he built a music empire named Fire Base that worked to dominate the music scene.
In 2017, Kyagulanyi stood and won the Kyadondo East byelection as he launched his political career.
He would later use his popularity to help other opposition candidates win byelections in Jinja Municipality East, Rukungiri ,Arua Municipality and Bugiri Municipality as his own popularity also grew.
By the time of the 2021 general elections where he challenged President Museveni for the highest office in the country, Kyagulanyi’s popularity had grown , especially among the youths who viewed him as they liberator.
However, the incumbent would later win the election with 5.85 million votes representing 58.64 percent of the total votes cast, while the main opposition candidate Bobi Wine won 3.48 million votes representing 34.83 percent .
Kyagulanyi has since challenged the outcome of the election.
