Police have arrested 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) in Bujjuko, Mpigi District, after they allegedly blocked a section of the Mityana highway on Monday afternoon, disrupting traffic and inciting unrest ahead of a scheduled campaign visit by presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, also known as Bobi Wine.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), the incident occurred as Kyagulanyi was expected to travel to Mityana District for his presidential rally on October 6, 2025.
Although the candidate was initially expected to use the Mityana highway, he opted for the Hoima Road route instead.
Police say a joint security deployment had been arranged along both routes to facilitate his movement and ensure public order.
However, at Bujjuko Trading Centre, a group of NUP supporters reportedly gathered, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, bringing traffic to a standstill.
In a statement released on Monday evening, SSP Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and condemned the disruption caused by the group.
“At Bujjuko trading centre along the Mityana highway, a group of NUP supporters gathered, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, disrupting traffic flow and inciting unrest. Security personnel issued warnings, but the group persisted, leading to the arrest of about 29 suspects who are currently held at Wakiso Police Division,” Onyango said.

He added that the security agencies had deployed jointly to ensure peaceful campaign activities for all presidential candidates and warned against acts that inconvenience other road users or breach traffic regulations.
“We urge all presidential candidates to comply with traffic regulations, follow approved route plans, and respect the rights of other road users,” SSP Onyango emphasized.
The police spokesperson further noted that investigations are underway, and the suspects will face charges related to unlawful assembly, obstruction of traffic, and incitement to violence once inquiries are complete.
Kyagulanyi’s campaign in Mityana has drawn significant public attention, with supporters turning up in large numbers in various parts of the district.
However, police say they will not tolerate acts that threaten public order or disrupt the flow of traffic during campaign activities
