At least 63 people have been confirmed dead in an early morning accident involving two buses and two other vehicle along the Kampala-Gulu highway.
The accident happened at Asili farm Kitaleba village along Kampala Gulu high way in Kiryadongo District involving a Isuzu bus registration number UAM 045V belonging to Planet company and another bus registration number UBF 614X belonging to Nile star company, a Toyota Land Cruiser registration number CGO 5132AB 07 and a Tata lorry registration number UBK 647C.
It’s alleged that around midnight on Tuesday, the Nile Star bus from Kampala to Arua tried to overtake a Tata lorry while another bus from Adjumani to Kampala was also overtaking the land cruiser.
The driver of the planet bus swerved to the right lane hence a head and side collision between Nile star bus and Planet bus while the Toyota land cruiser and Tata lorry drivers also lost control and over turned several times and fell in the valley, injuring and killing their occupants.
The two buses met head-on during the ovetaking maneurvers.
“63 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured,” Traffic Police spokesperson, Michael Kananura said.
Reports indicate that victims were rushed to Kiryandongo general hospital and other health facilities while bodies were taken to the mortuary pending post-mortems.
