Prime Minister of Uganda, Robinah Nabbanja renewed her National Identity Card in Kakumiro Town Council, Kakumiro District, joining thousands of Ugandans in the ongoing nationwide National ID renewal exercise.
Speaking shortly after completing her renewal process, Nabbanja emphasized the critical role National IDs play in governance and service delivery. She urged all eligible citizens to actively participate in the exercise, which runs until November 2025.
“A valid National ID is essential for participating in elections,” said Nabbanja.“It is not just about identification it’s about your right to vote, your access to services, and your recognition as a citizen.”
The renewal process is part of a broader effort by the government to update the national registry with accurate and current citizen information.
It includes enhanced biometric data collection, such as iris scans, to improve security and ensure the integrity of identity records.
The Prime Minister noted that many Ugandans’ fingerprints have faded or become difficult to capture due to age or manual work.
She added that the updated biometric system addresses these challenges and aligns Uganda’s identity management with international standards.
“We are modernizing our systems to protect every Ugandan’s identity and ensure inclusivity in national programs,” Nabbanja said.
She called on Ugandans to embrace the exercise noting it’s about their future.
“Let us all embrace this exercise with seriousness. It is about our future, our security, and our democracy,” she noted.
National IDs remain vital for a range of services, including access to banking, education, employment, and health care. The cards also serve as the primary document for voter identification during elections, underscoring their importance ahead of upcoming electoral events.

The government, through the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), has deployed teams across the country to facilitate the renewal exercise.
Citizens are encouraged to verify and update their information at their respective registration points.
Prime Minister Nabbanja’s participation in the exercise reinforces the government’s commitment to inclusive and secure national documentation.
“Do not wait for the deadline. Renew now. Your National ID is your gateway to services, and most importantly, your voice in shaping Uganda’s future,” she said.
