Ugandan troops serving under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have eliminated a key Al-Shabaab leader in the Lower Shabelle region.
Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, widely recognized as the general commander of Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle, was killed in an ambush near Buulomareer on 14 September 2025.
Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, Sector One Commander, commended the troops at Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base (FOB) for delivering “a decisive blow against Al-Shabaab.”
He confirmed that the operation also led to the recovery of a pistol with three loaded magazines, a porch, binoculars, and two mobile phones, among other items.
Brig Gen Ssemwanga assured the soldiers that both AUSSOM, UPDF leadership, and international partners remain committed to dismantling the terrorist network and restoring stability in Somalia.
Maj David Ogweng, commander of Buulo Mareer FOB, thanked Brig Gen Ssemwanga for his continuous support and guidance, which he said enabled his troops to complete the mission successfully.
He emphasised the resolve of his forces to carry out their duties and ensure peace, security, and stability in Somalia.
During his visit, Brig Gen Ssemwanga also inspected FOBs in Quoryoley and Goloweyn to evaluate operational readiness and troop welfare.
He was accompanied by Lt Col Justus Magyembe, Contingent Logistics and Engineering Commander, alongside commanders responsible for Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Women’s Affairs.
The operation marks a significant achievement for UPDF forces in Somalia and underscores their ongoing commitment to counter-terrorism efforts in the region.
