Retired officers have been urged to protect and preserve the gains achieved under government programs to ensure lasting peace, prosperity, and stability in the country.
The call was made by the Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 3rd Infantry Division, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma Karate, during the official opening of an ideological mindset training for more than 200 veterans at Bugema Army Barracks in Mbale District.
“As you demonstrate commitment in support of government programs, I urge you to safeguard these gains to ensure long-term stability,” Maj Gen Sserunkuma said.
He praised the veterans’ leagues for their strong organizational structures, noting that they continue to play a key role in community defence, economic empowerment, and environmental protection.
Highlighting the recently passed UPDF Amendment Bill, 2025, Maj Gen Sserunkuma reassured the veterans that the new law guarantees improved access to essential welfare services, including quality medical care, duty-free goods, legal support, rehabilitation, and an enhanced disability compensation package.
He described the legislation as “a major milestone” in addressing long-standing welfare concerns of retired personnel and the families of fallen comrades.
Mbale Resident City Commissioner, Mr. Wopuwa George William, commended the veterans for their patriotism and called on them to support the NRM Presidential flag bearer and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, emphasizing the importance of unity and continued participation in government programs.
He also expressed gratitude to veterans for their honourable service to the nation.
In his remarks, Col Allan Kyangungu, Deputy Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, encouraged the ex-servicemen to be model ambassadors of discipline and ideological clarity in their communities.
The ongoing mindset training, officials said, is part of a broader ideological reorientation initiative aimed at reinforcing patriotism, discipline, and readiness ahead of the forthcoming election security operations.
