Uganda Airlines CEO, Jenifer Bamuturaki’s time at the national carrier, Uganda Airlines has come to and end after being sacked by President Museveni.
Sources say Bamuturaki was sacked last year and lend credence to the reports, she in a leaked email informed staff on Monday that her tenure had come to an end.
“The Board will advertise the position of Chief Executive Officer shortly, and you are all encouraged to apply if you meet the required qualifications. The job description and application form will be published on the website,” she said in the email.
Trouble
Bamuturaki’s sacking follows a heated meeting in which it is reported that President Museveni expressed discomfort with her being the CEO of the national carrier after reports of gross mismanagement and poor performance of the airline.
It is reported that during the September 2025 meeting while Bamuturaki tried to explain herself to President Museveni, her defence was not convincing, prompting the president to ask her leave.
This came at a time of a probe by parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises(COSASE) over a shs237.8 billion loss incurred during the 2023/2024 financial year and quoted by the Auditor General’s report.
The loss was pinned on mismanagement, undue over-payments, and high costs of maintenance of the aircraft, among others.
There were also allegations of a ticket scam featuring an internal syndicate that resulted in the loss of USD 253,189 and violations of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Act, embezzlement and generally abuse of office.
Recently, the State House Anti Corruption Unit and the Criminal Investigations Directorate started investigating Bamuturaki over abuse of office, embezzlement and false accounting by the airline officials.
To this, the CID deputy director in charge of economic fraud, ACP Mark Odong requested Bamuturaki to present certified copies of several documents, including the National Airline Business and Implementation Plan, the approved 2024/2025 budget, Contracts Committee minutes approving the purchase of Boeing aircraft, and procurement files for services provided by Mixjet Flight Support Services, Associated Energy Group, Nyanzi Tours and Travel, and Aircraft Leasing Services (ALS) Limited.
Investigators also requested procurement records related to the construction of Uganda Airlines’ offices in Entebbe, the Internal Audit Report for the 2024/2025 financial year, revenue accounting and ticketing records, banking documents, cash receipt registers, fuel expenditure records, and a list of companies that supported the launch of the airline’s London route.
The investigations according to sources privy to the matter, follow the stormy September 2025 meeting at State House in which the president indicated his discontent with happenings at the national carrier, which was revived in 2019.
Sources have also indicated that one of the former CEOs for Ethiopian Airlines is being tapped as the replacement for Bamuturaki.
